I got to hear my bishop on Sunday, along with a lot of other people, but not, apparently, the HBO viewing audience.
If you missed him Sunday, he's here:

If you missed him on The Daily Show on Tuesday, he's here:

Just noticed this from the link I provided:
"...first openly Episcopal gay bishop..."
That made me giggle and is not true. There have been other openly Episcopal gay bishops before. For sure.
There have just not been openly gay Episcopal bishops before.
I missed the invocation (due to work) the first time around, but saw a rerun a few days ago, and: I hadn't realized his eminence was that impressive on merit as well as because of his bio.
(In other words, wow. Nice prayer.)
Yup. There are those in the Episcopal Church and in the Anglican Communion who thought the good people of NH were trying to make a radical statement by electing Gene. Those people haven't been to NH, is my guess.
The good people of NH were mostly surprised by that reaction. They just elected the most obvious candidate for the job, who they all knew personally because NH is small and because he'd been around for decades, and who they knew was smart, organized, good with people, and a good pray-er.
Other dioceses should think about electing their bishops that way, although I can see why they don't always, with all the hubbub.
Yup. It was a nice prayer. And if you weren't listening to Lowery on inauguration day, you should hear his benediction, too.
It's not everyone who could both provide a living definition for the word "gracious" and one-up Jon Stewart in the space of fifteen seconds. Go Bishop Gene!
